Tess (Therese) Darcy is a physiotherapist with 30 years of experience and post graduate university qualifications in both musculoskeletal physiotherapy and health ergonomics. Her passion lies in helping those with persistent and or complex health challenges.
Tess has been using manual therapy treatment techniques developed by Watson Headache Approach® founder Dean Watson, since 2000. Dean Watson passionately believes that all headache and migraine sufferers should have an expert assessment of the upper cervical spine in order to determine whether or not noxious information from cervical afferents is contributing to their experience of suffering from a headache or migraine condition. Tess recognises that the cervical spine can influence migraine pathophysiology, acute concussion and persistent concussion symptom presentations, but it is certainly not the only factor involved and in some cases, plays no role at all.
Tess has done additional training in the management of jaw and orofacial pain.
Standard comprehensive vestibular assessments are undertaken with the use of Vesticam infrared video goggles.
Tess uses various combinations of pain science education, health coaching, orthopaedic manual therapy, dry needling, exercise rehabilitation and vestibular rehabilitation based on the findings of a detailed initial examination. She is able to provide guidance on the use of electromodulation devices where appropriate. Rehabilitation following a concussion injury in particular, typically consists of a combination of therapies to address the visual system, the vestibular system and the musculoskeletal system and their interaction with each other, always trying to utilise the power of positive neuroplasticity.
Coastal Headache Clinic regularly receive referrals from General Practitioners, Neurologists, ENT specialists, Pain Specialists, other allied health and alternative health practitioners. We are able to simply and securely receive referrals through Medical Objects.
Alternatively a referral form can be downloaded here.
Communication back to the referring professional is routinely provided after the initial consultation and at discharge. Interim reports are provided where appropriate.
We are well aware of the red flags associated with headache, concussion, traumatic and non traumatic neck or jaw pain and dizziness presentations and readily refer on to the medical profession where indicated.
Please be aware that our manual therapy approaches, when utilised, do not involve any manipulation/high velocity thrust techniques in the cervical region. All cervical manual therapy directed to the upper cervical spine is slow and sustained, with headache treatment often attempting to reproduce and then resolve the typical pain of headache. This confirms the relevancy of the upper cervical spine dysfunction to the client’s headache or migraine experience.
We are able to provide care under the Chronic Disease Management Scheme, where a GP Management Plan (GPMP) and Team Care Arrangements (TCAs) have been developed. We are able to process Medicare rebates immediately. The client will be required to pay the gap. For your clients with Private Health Insurance, rebates are claimed on the spot via HICAPS. Again your client will be required to pay the gap.
